The Dutch cyclist from the Alpecin-Premier Tech team has won with authority the tough upward sprint that has ended in Ussel, followed by Tom Pidcock (Pinarello-Q36.5) and Alex Baudin (EF Education-EasyPost) on a day conditioned by the heat wave.
Dutch cyclist Mathieu van der Poel (Alpecin-Premier Tech) won the ninth stage of the 113th edition of the Tour de France on Sunday, with a 154.6 km journey between Malemort and Ussel (shorter than expected due to the heat wave that is hitting central France).
Van der Poel was the strongest in the final 750m (an average slope of 4.2%) before reaching the finish line, imposing himself on the four-runner team's sprint, behind Tom Pidcock (Pinarello-Q36.5) and Alex Baudin (EF Education-EasyPost).
After many attacks, Van der Poelmanaged to make the day's getaway at kilometer 57 along with fifteenother runners. As the miles have progressed, the group has been shrinking, and at Mont Bessou only four runners have been left in the head.
Meanwhile, the UAE Team Emirates XRG has kept the lead on the getaway at all times. The favorite group, led by Tadej Pogacar , has reached six seconds from the winner, allowing the Slovenian to keep the yellow jersey .
In the overall ranking, Pogacar leads Jonas Vingegaardin 2 minutes and 42 seconds. Isaac del Toro is third (3 minutes and 27 seconds), Remco Evenepoel fourth (3 minutes and 30 seconds) and Juan Ayuso fifth (3 minutes and 34 seconds).
After the day of rest, on Tuesday the tenth stage of the Tour will be played, between Aurillac and Le Lioran, with a journey of 166.6 kilometers.
