The French cyclist Alex Baudin (EF Education) has won solo the first stage of the Auvergne-Rodano-Alpes Tour after a day's getaway, making him the first leaderof the race.
The Belgian Ramses Debruyne (Alpecin) and the French Leo Bisiaux (Decathlon) were second and third respectively. They crossed the finish line 32 seconds late after escaping the platoon in five kilometres to the end.
The first stage began in Vizille and ended in Saint-Ismier. The cyclists travelled 146 kilometres and had to cross five ports along the route. The last stage, Rousset (first class), was located about 20 kilometres from the finish line.
Today was the stage to see if the favourites are fit to contest the general, knowing that the journey was hard.
After several previous attempts, the day 's escape was completed by Raúl García Pierna (Movistar), Alex Díaz (Caja Rural), Sergio Samitier (Cofidis), Alex Baudin, Alastair Mackellar (EF Education), Georg Zimmermann (Lotto), Matteo Vercher (TotalEnergies), George Bennet (NSN) and Clement Braz (Groupama).
As the mountain ports of the day passed, the cyclists of this group fell behind, one by one, and Baudin advanced alone.
He climbed Rousset in the first place, and with a quick descent he managed to maintain an advantage of more than a minute.
From behind, within five kilometersof the finish line, and with the permission of the platoon, ten runners launched the attack with the intention of catching up with Baudin, but it was impossible for them.
