Mikel Landa won't play the Giro de Italia.
The Basque cyclist Mikel Landaof the Soudal Quick-Step team will not be playing in the 2026 Giro de Italia, as announced on Monday by theBelgian team. Landa has a small fracture in the pelvis due to the fall in the Vuelta and needs a period of rest and recovery, so he will not be able to contest the race.
In this context, Soudal Quick-Step recalls how Landa, in winter due to a disease, began to compete later than planned, in the Return to Catalonia. In the Return to the Basque Country, in the second stage, he fell and left the race the next day; medical examinations have determined that he has a fracture in the pelvis: "In principle, given the nature of the injury, the injury was not detected; he has begun to recover, but needs a longer recovery period."
Murgia, in statements collected on the team's website, has stressed that she is "disappointed" because "I worked hard in the winter": "Back again, I was beginning to feel good. After the fall, I was in pain, but because of the type of fracture, it was hard to identify; now my only goal is to recover."
"It's a shame to lose the Giro de Italia, especially because I was very motivated, considering what happened in 2025, but now the priority is to be well again and there will be new goals in the season."
Also, Joao Almeida of the UAE, one of the great favourites for the 2026 Giro de Italia starting on May 8, has announced that he will not be on the test: "Unfortunately I will not be in the Giro de Italia, although the forecast was to play it. In recent months, I have had a disease that has greatly affected my preparation; I will not be ready in time and I regret it, because it is a race that I love very much," Almeida said in her Instagram account.
