In a statement posted on the networks, officials have claimed that the 19-year-oldcyclist died "as a result of a serious accident." On the other hand, the Portuguese channel RTP , which was reporting the competition, has claimed to havecollidedhead-on with a vehicle driving in the opposite direction .
Due to the incident, the stage has been suspended about 20 kilometres to the end and, according to the organizers, "as a sign of respect and mourning, the podium ceremony will not take place".
