Filippo Ganna and Marlen Reusser win the classic Across Flanders
The Italian cyclist has surpassed the local idol Wout Van Aert in the last few metres after a long chase, while the Swiss has crossed the finish line ahead of the Neerlanders Demi Vollering and Lieje Nooijen.
Filippo Ganna (Ineos) today won the 80th edition of the Belgian classic Across Flanders (Dwars door Vlaanderen), played between Roeselare and Waregem on a 184.6 kilometer journey, where the Italian cyclist overtook local idol Wout Van Aert in the final meters after a long chase.
The Swiss Marlen Reusser (Movistar Team) won the Belgian classic ahead of the Dutch Demi Vollering (FDJ United-SUEZ) and Liège Nooij (Team Visma).
Ganna and Van Aert have been protagonists in the finish line, offering an exciting and historic ending to the last few meters. Van Aert was on the run, clinging to the pressure of the platoon, but the reaction of the 'Verbania Giant' has been subtracting seconds and in the last few meters has surpassed his opponent, who had completed a great stage when the Belgian was touched, but without the prize of victory.
The 29-year-old Italian, twice the world champion against time, has crossed the finish line with a time of 3h48:27, with an average of 48.5 kilometers per hour. Behind him, Van Aert has not been able to complete his feat. Visma 's leader has not won since the 2025 Tour de France, his famous attack on Pogacar in Montmartre.
The start of the race has been a blow to cyclists, as there have been numerous attacks and some major falls, such as the one suffered by Vizcaíno Jon Barrenetxea (Movistar) and the Belgians Dylan Teuns and Berckmoes , who have had to leave the race.
Ganna has replaced the American Neilson Powless, who last year overtook three Visma cyclists in the sprint, including Van Aert himself.
On the finish line, the Italian admitted that he has seen a chance to win "on the last curve." "After a long time of pursuit, I begin to believe that I could win after the last curve," Ganna explained.
