The organizers of the Red Eléctrica Punta Galea Challenge of the big waves have made the final decision to hold the contest on Saturday in Getxo (Bizkaia).
These 'magnificent conditions' caused by the 'bundle of rubbish that is shaking the Basque coast', together with the announcement of a 'dry and pleasant' weather (about 18 degrees), will allow the oldest European competition in the specialty to be held again after a three-year standstill.
The main novelty of this invitation tournament, which began in 2005, will be the first participation of female surfers, including the Australian Laura Enever, who holds the Guinness record of the largest wave ever surfed by a woman, or the Guipuzcoana Nadia Erostarbe.
In addition, 30 guests include South African Grant Twiggy Baker, three-time world champion, Chilean Ramón Navarro , Brazilian Lucas Chianca , Irish Conor Maguire , Italian Francisco Porcella , English Tom Lowe , American Mason Hyce Barnes and Portuguese Miguel Blanco and Tony Laureano .
Among the locals, getxotarra Natxo Gonzalez , winner of the last edition in 2022, will be Aritz Aranburu, Axi Muniain, Indar Unanue, Yago Dominguez, Xabi Lopez, Txaber Gaminde, Endika Winny Ruiz, David Zuku Bustamante, Kosme Fernandez and Ibon Lopez.
The organizers expect a large audience in the natural amphitheater of the spectacular cliff of Cape Galea, at a height of 60 meters, in a contest that starts at 8:30 and will last for about eight hours.
